Call for Applications for Doctoral Program Scholarships 2007

Announcement

In the framework of the CMU-Portugal Program, under the governance of the Information and Communication Technologies Institute (ICTI), the FCT opens a call for applications for PhD Scholarships, taking place in Portugal and at the CMU (Carnegie Mellon University), in the following fields:

  • Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Language Technologies
  • Technological Change and Innovation
  • Engineering and Public Policy
  • Mathematics

Specific research topics are specified by the CMU-Portugal Program and available at www.cmuportugal.org;

The research topics available, as well as the supervisors, both at CMU and at the Portuguese Universities, are defined by the CMU-Portugal Program. The candidate must identify the research topics of his/her interest in the online application form and is required to present a motivation letter where he should also justify his/her research topics selection.

The scholarships by-laws correspond to the decree-law (Lei nº 40/2004, de 18 de Agosto) and the regulations applicable are available at www.fct.mctes.pt (Regulamento da Formação Avançada e Qualificação de Recursos Humanos da FCT) in Portuguese.

FINANCIAL AID

The scholarships are financed by funds of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education.

TERM OF THE CALL

The call will remain open permanently between May 4th 2007 and July 15th 2007. There will be two evaluation cycles, one for applications electronically sealed before May 31st 2007 24:00 GMT (12pm, GMT).

APPLICATIONS

Portuguese citizens and all the holders of residence permit in Portugal as well as foreign citizens or stateless persons non-resident in Portugal, are eligible, since the application is supported by the host national institutions, signatory of the International Cooperation Protocol in Science, Technology and Higher Education, signed by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation, in the framework of the CMU-Portugal Program.

For the candidates who have had previous scholarships sponsored by the FCT, that period is taken into consideration for the calculation of the maximum duration of the scholarship.

EVALUATION PROCEDURE

The criteria for acceptance of a candidate is, essentially, based on the merit and motivation of the candidate. The evaluation panel will review the correspondent applications, considering the review elements and producing an arranged list of candidates.

The applications should be submitted on-line, starting on May 4th 2007 in any of the websites below:

No other means of application will be accepted.

Academic Certificates and Letters of Recommendation should be enclosed. This documentation should be sent by mail or in hand, in a closed envelope, addressed to:
