In the framework of the CMU-Portugal Program, FCT and the Information and Communication Technologies Institute (ICTI) open a call for applications for PhD Scholarships, taking place in Portugal and at the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), in the following fields:
Specific research topics are available at www.cmuportugal.org.
The research topics available, as well as the supervisors, both at CMU and at the Portuguese Universities, are defined by the CMU-Portugal Program. Hence candidates do not need to present a work program or an adviser's support letter and CV at the time of application. The candidate must identify the research topics of his/her interest in the online application form and is required to present a motivation letter where he should also justify his/her research topics selection.
The scholarships by-laws correspond to the Research Fellow Statute (Law 40/2004, of August 18), and according to the FCT Regulations.
These scholarships are available to persons holding a master degree or equivalent in the areas targeted by the CMU-Portugal program.
The call will be open from May 26 to December 31 2008. Applications sealed before midnight on July 15 2008 are eligible for support starting on September 1 2008.
Applications to these scholarships are open to those candidates who satisfy the requirements established in item 1 of article 17 of the Regulations on Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources of the Foundation for Science and Technology.
Candidates to PhD scholarships, who have held a scholarship of the same type under FCT programs, will be limited a maximum number of years of support by the total number of support years under all such grants.
Evaluation is essentially based on the merit and motivation of the applicant. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate good English fluency. Candidates are strongly recommended to present the results of both the “TOEFL Test” (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and the “GRE GENERAL TEST” (general exam of the Graduate Record Examination) or, if it is the case, the results of the “GMAT” (Graduate Management Admission Test). The evaluation panel will review the submitted applications, weighting the review elements and producing a sorted list of candidates.
