The research topics available, as well as the supervisors, both at CMU and at the Portuguese Universities, are defined by the CMU-Portugal Program. Hence candidates do not need to present a work program or an adviser's support letter and CV at the time of application. However the candidate is required to present recommendation letters and a motivation letter where he should justify the reasons for applying to one of these programs and also justify his research topics selection. The scholarship will only be granted if the candidate is accepted by CMU and by one of the Portuguese Universities within one of the PhD programs.
The scholarships will be granted under the rules established by the Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação (Law 40/2004, of August 18) and according to the FCT Regulamento da Formação Avançada e Qualificação de Recursos Humanos.
These scholarships are available to persons holding a master degree or equivalent in the areas targeted by the CMU-Portugal program.
The scholarships will be supported under the Programa Operacional Potencial Humano do QREN Portugal 2007-2013 and by funds of the MCTES. Applications are eligible for support starting on September 1, 2011.
The call will be open from November 15, 2010 to February 1, 2011 according with the specific admission dates of each PhD program, which are the following:
Computer Science | 15/12/2010 |
Electrical and Computer Engineering | 15/12/2010 |

Applications to these scholarships are open to those candidates who satisfy the requirements established in item 1 of Article 17 of the Regulations on Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources of the Foundation for Science and Technology.
Candidates to PhD scholarships, who have held a scholarship of the same type under FCT programs, will be limited a maximum number of years of support by the total number of support years under all such grants.
Evaluation is essentially based on the merit and motivation of the applicant. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate good English fluency. Candidates are strongly recommended to present the results of both the “TOEFL Test” (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and the “GRE GENERAL TEST” (general exam of the Graduate Record Examination) or, if it is the case, the results of the “GMAT” (Graduate Management Admission Test).
