12.01.2016 - Final results of the 2014 call. A total of 941 studentships and fellowships were awarded:

  • PhD Studentships = 436
  • PhD in Industry Studentships = 16
  • Post-doctoral Fellowships = 489
  • 14.07.2015- Results of the 2014 call, after appeals. A total of 935 studentships/fellowships have been recommended for funding: 435 PhD Studentships; 16 PhD in Industry Studentships; 484 Post-doctoral Fellowships.
    1078 PhD Studentships have been approved in 2014 calls: 451 in the annual call + 627 within approved FCT PhD Programmes.

With this call, FCT aims to support the best graduate researchers who wish to pursue research leading to a PhD degree, in any scientific domain, and the most creative post-doctoral researchers in pursuing cutting-edge projects, in Portuguese or foreign research centres.

Post-doctoral Fellowships are available for PhD holders. Fellowships have a maximum duration of six years, upon mid-term approval and budget availability.

PhD Studentships support research projects of graduates who comply with the requirements to apply for PhD studies. Studentships have a maximum duration of four years, and minimum of three consecutive months.

PhD Studentships in Industry support graduates who wish to carry out research projects in an industry setting, leading to a PhD. Studentships have a maximum duration of four years, and minimum of three consecutive months.

Who can apply

Portuguese citizens, and citizens of EU member states may apply, as well as citizens of other countries, as long as they are resident in Portugal or are citizens of countries with which Portugal has exchange agreements.

Applicants to PhD Studentships, including those in an industry setting need to:

  • hold either a pre-Bologna degree, or a pre- or post-Bologna Masters degree by 31 December 2014;
  • have a first degree grade of 14 or higher, or, for grades below 14, be an author on an original, peer-review paper (published or accepted for publication by the application deadline), or an equivalent indicator of scientific output;
  • not have been selected for a PhD studentship in an FCT PhD Programme.

Applicants to post-doctoral fellowships are required to:

  • have completed their PhD by 31 December 2014;
  • be an author on an original, peer-review paper (published or accepted for publication by the application deadline), or an equivalent indicator of scientific output;
  • have at least one scientific output indicator for every three years post-PhD.

What’s included

Selected applicants will be awarded monthly stipends and supplementary support which may include tuition fees, relocation costs, travel awards and health insurance, when applicable, as detailed in the Regulations.

This call is supported by the national budget of the Ministry of Education and Science and, when applicable, by the European Social Fund within the 2014-2020 EU Strategic Framework.

How and when to apply

The call for applications is open from 31 July to 17h00 (Lisbon time) on 30 September 2014.

Applications should be submitted online, via the dedicated platform. Only one proposal per applicant is allowed.

Evaluation

Proposals will be evaluated by evaluation panels, that will be specifically set up for this call, based on the Fields of Science (FOS) areas defined in the Frascati Manual. Applicants will be awarded grades from 1 to 5, for each of the following two, equally weighted criteria: merit of the applicant and quality and achievability of the work programme. Applicants will be ranked according to the weighted average of the scores for each criterium.
