Purpose and Overview

With this call, FCT aims to support the best graduates who wish to pursue research leading to a PhD degree, and the most creative post-doctoral researchers in pursuing cutting-edge projects, in Portuguese or foreign research centres, in all fields of research.

Post-doctoral Fellowship are available for PhD holders, preferentially with less than six years post-doctoral experience. Fellowships have a maximum duration of six years, upon mid-term approval and budget availability.

PhD Studentships support research projects of graduates who comply with the requirements to apply for PhD studies. Studentships have a maximum duration of four years, and must run for a minimum of three consecutive months.

PhD Studentships in Industry - support graduates who wish to carry out research projects in an industry setting, leading to a PhD. Studentships have a maximum duration of four years, and must run for a minimum of three consecutive months.

Who can apply

Portuguese citizens, and citizens of EU member states may apply, as well as citizens of other countries, as long as they are resident in Portugal or are citizens of countries with which Portugal has exchange agreements.

Foreign researchers who are non-residents in Portugal may apply to post-doctoral fellowships, as long as their application is supported by a Portuguese institution and the research project is to be carried out entirely in Portugal.

Applicants to PhD Studentships including those in industry need to:

  • Hold either a pre-Bologna degree, or a pre-/post-Bologna Masters degree at time of application;
  • Have a first degree grade of 14 or higher, or, for grades below 14, be an author on an original, peer-review paper (published or accepted for publication by the application deadline), or an equivalent indicator of scientific output;
  • Not have held any prior FCT-funded PhD studentship, of any type;
  • Not have been selected for a PhD studentship in an FCT PhD Programme.

Applicants to post-doctoral fellowships are required to:
