2007 Call for Applications for Doctoral and Postdoctoral Scholarships as part of the MIT | Portugal Program

This call is now closed. It has reopened under different conditions on April 8, 2008. All proposals not yet considered for evaluation were given the opportunity to be reviewed by the candidates under the new conditions. Candidates were notified by email.

Announcement

In the framework of the MIT-Portugal Program, FCT opens a call for applications:

  • PHD Scholarships, taking place in Portugal and at the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), in the following fields:
    • Bio-Engineering
    • Leaders for Technical Industries
    • Sustainable Energy Systems
    • Transportation Systems

    Specific research topics are available at the www.mitportugal.org site;

  • Post Doctoral Scholarships, in the following areas:
    • Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing;
    • Sustainable Energy Systems;
    • Transportation Systems.

The research topics available, as well as the supervisors, both at MIT and at the Portuguese Universities, are defined by the MIT-Portugal Program. The candidate must select the available research topics in the online application form and is required to present a motivation letter where he should also justify his research topics selection.

The scholarships by-laws correspond to the decree-law (Lei nº 40/2004, de 18 de Agosto) and the regulations applicable are available at www.fct.mctes.pt (Regulamento da Formação Avançada e Qualificação de Recursos Humanos da FCT) in Portuguese.

PhD Scholarships

A maximum of 9 PhD grants are available for each PhD course indicated above, per year, for those which hold a master degree in Engineering, or equivalent, and, for the Sustainable Energy Systems, a degree in Economics is also eligible.

Post Doctoral Scholarships

The scholarships for the development of research work in Portuguese scientific institutions, are granted every year, at the maximum number of 4 for each of the Research Areas indicated above, and are available for those holding a PhD degree in Engineering. In the Sustainable Energy System area, a degree in Economics is also eligible. Preference will be given to applicants who have obtained a doctoral degree at less than five years ago.

Financial Aid

The scholarships are financed by funds of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education.

Term of the Call

The call will be opened permanently from February 1st 2007 [Closed on April 2, 2008.]. The applications sealed until the 24:00 of March 16th 2007, can be funded by May 1st 2007 (except for the Bio-Engineering area, in which those will start on September 15th 2007). The applications sealed until the 24:00 of June 30th 2007, can be funded by September 15th 2007.

Applications

Portuguese citizens and all the holders of residence permit in Portugal as well as foreigner citizens or stateless persons non-resident in Portugal, are eligible, since the application is supported by the host national institutions, signatory of the International Cooperation Protocol in Science, Technology and Higher Education, signed by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation, in the framework of the MIT-Portugal Program.

For the PhD scholarships candidates who have had previous scholarships sponsored by the FCT, that period it is taken into consideration for the calculation of the maximum duration of the scholarship.

Evaluations Procedure

The criteria for acceptance of a candidate is, essentially, based on the merit and motivation of the candidate. The evaluation panel will review the correspondent applications, considering the review elements and producing an arranged list of candidates.

The applications should be submitted on-line, starting on February 1st 2007 in any of the websites below:

No other means of application will be accepted.

Academic Certificates and Letters of Recommendation should be enclosed. This documentation should be sent by mail or in hand, in a closed envelope, addressed to:
