2009 Call for Applications for Doctoral and Postdoctoral Scholarships as part of the MIT | Portugal Program

Announcement

In the framework of the MIT-Portugal Program, FCT opens a call for applications to:

PhD Scholarships, taking place in Portugal and at the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), in the following fields:
- Bio-Engineering;
- Leaders for Technical Industries (Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing);
- Sustainable Energy Systems;
- Transportation Systems.
Post Doctoral Scholarships, in the following area:
- Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing;

The research topics available, as well as the supervisors, both at MIT and at the Portuguese Universities, are defined by the MIT-Portugal Program. Hence candidates do not need to present a work program or an adviser's support letter and CV at the time of application. The candidate must select the available research topics in the online application form and is required to present a motivation letter where he should also justify his research topics selection.

The scholarships by-laws correspond to the Research Fellow Statute (Law 40/2004, of August 18), and according to the Regulations.

PhD Scholarships

These scholarships are available to persons holding a master degree or equivalent in the areas targeted by the MIT Portugal program.

Post Doctoral scholarships in Portugal

These scholarships are available to persons holding a doctoral degree, preferably completed in the last five years, for research work to be carried out in Portuguese scientific institutions.

Financial Support

The scholarships are financed by funds of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education.

Term of the Call

The call will be open until the 28^th of February 2009.

Applications for PhD Scholarships

Applicants can be either Portuguese nationals or foreign citizens, including individuals without nationality, provided the application is supported by the Portuguese hosting institutions adherent to the Acordo para a Cooperação Internacional em Ciência e Tecnologia e Ensino Superior, celebrated with Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, in the framework of the MIT Portugal Program.

Candidates to PhD scholarships, who have held a scholarship of the same type under FCT programs, will be limited to a maximum number of years of support by the total number of support years under all such grants.

Applications for Post-Doctoral Scholarships

Evaluation

Evaluation is essentially based on the merit and motivation of the applicant. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate good English fluency. The evaluation procedure may require an interview in English either in person or by video conference. Preference will be given to candidates who present the results of the GRE GENERAL TEST (general exam of the Graduate Record Examination). The evaluation panel, will review the submitted applications, weighting the review elements and producing a sorted list of candidates.
