2011 Call for Applications for
Doctoral Scholarships in the framework of
the MIT Portugal Program

Announcement

In the framework of the MIT Portugal Program, FCT opens a call for applications to PhD Scholarships, taking place in Portugal and at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US), in the following fields:

  • Bio-Engineering Systems
  • Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing – Leaders for Technical Industries (LTI)
  • Sustainable Energy Systems
  • Transportation Systems

The research topics available, as well as the supervisors, both at MIT and at the Portuguese Universities, are defined by the MIT Portugal Program. Hence candidates do not need to present a work program or an adviser’s support letter as well as her/his CV at the time of application. The candidate is required to present a motivation letter where she/he should indicate specific areas of potential interest.

The scholarships by-laws are according to the Research Fellow Statute (Law 40/2004, of August 18), and to the FCT Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources.

These scholarships are available to candidates holding a master degree or equivalent in the areas targeted by the MIT Portugal program.

Financial Support

The scholarships are financed by funds of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education of the Portuguese Government.

Term of the Call

The call will be open until the 28th of February 2011.

Applications

Applicants can be either Portuguese nationals or foreign citizens, including individuals without nationality, provided the application is supported by the Portuguese hosting institutions adherent to the Acordo para a Cooperação Internacional em Ciência e Tecnologia e Ensino Superior (Agreement for the International Cooperation in Science, Technology and Higher Education), celebrated with Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (Science and Technology Foundation), in the framework of the MIT Portugal Program.

Candidates who have held a scholarship of the same type under FCT programs, will be limited to a maximum number of years of support established by FCT regulations.

Evaluation

Evaluation is essentially based on the merit and motivation of the applicant. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate English proficiency. The evaluation procedure may require an interview in English either in person or by video conference. Preference will be given to candidates who present good results in the GRE GENERAL TEST. The evaluation panel will review the submitted applications, weighting the review elements and producing a sorted list of candidates.
