2008 Call for Applications for Doctoral and Post-Doctoral Scholarships
Announcement
In the framework of the UT Austin|Portugal Program, FCT opens a call for:
-
PhD Scholarships, taking place in Portugal and at University of
Texas, at Austin, in the following areas:
-
Digital Media, in the following subjects:
- Participative Media for Education and Culture;
- Interactive Media Design;
- Interactive Music and Sound Design;
- Online Journalism;
- Film and Television.

Advanced Computing, as described below:
- Methodologies and techniques in HPC, distributed/grid
computing and large scale data analysis & management, to
solve computational engineering and science problems.

Mathematics, in the following subjects:
- Algebra and Number Theory;
- Applied and Numerical Analysis;
- Analysis and Partial Differential Equations;
- Geometry and Topology;
- Optimization;
- Stochastic Processes and Mathematical Finance;
- Dynamical Systems.

Post-Doctoral Scholarships taking place in Portugal
and at the University of Texas at Austin in the following areas:

- Film and Television.

Mathematics, in the following subjects:
- Algebra and Number Theory;

- Optimization;
- Stochastic Processes and Mathematical Finance;
- Dynamical Systems.
The subjects related to these scholarships are the ones specified by the
Program and announced in the website http://www.utaustinportugal.org.
Documents required for submission
- Complete Resume with academic and professional experience;
- Transcripts from an accredited university. The transcript must
indicate the degree received and the date awarded.
- Recommendation letters;
Note: These letters can be written by professors or employers.
- A Statement of purpose;
Note: The statement should explain the reasons why the candidate
wants to apply to one of these degrees, the relevance of his/her
investigation for society and the objectives of his/her studies.
- Name and CV of the proposed mentor (if available);
- Proposed work plan draft (if available).
If the candidate wishes to apply to a Dual Degree then he/she must add
the additional documents:
- GRE Scores (if available – if not, please state a date when they will
be available);
- TOEFL or IELTS Scores (if available – if not, please state a date
when they will be available);
- GMAT Scores – for Advanced Computing and Mathematics only (if
available – if not, please state a date when they will be available).
The scholarship is only awarded to those candidates that are able to
demonstrate that they were accepted by UT Austin and a Portuguese
University on one of the PhD or Post-Doc Programs.
Scholarships are granted under the conditions stated by on the Scientific Fellow’s Statute (Law n.
40/2004, of August 18th) and on the Regulations
for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources.
Financial Support
The scholarships are funded by the QREN Portugal 2007-2013’s Operational
Program Human Potential and by funds from the Ministry of Science,
Technology and Higher Education.
Call Duration
The call will be open from July 1st 2008 until 5 pm on
September 8th 2008.
Applications
Applications to these scholarships are open to all candidates that comply
with the requirements established on Article
17 of the Regulations on Advanced Training and Qualification of Human
Resources of the Foundation for Science and Technology.
The candidates to PhD and Post-Doc scholarships who have held the same
type of scholarship under other FCT Programs will be limited to a maximum
number of years of support. The number of years of support is computed
considering both the previous and present scholarships.
Evaluation Procedure
The criterion for acceptance of a candidate is, essentially, based on the
merit and motivation of the person applying. The evaluation panel will
review the submitted applications, weighting the review elements and
producing a sorted list of candidates.

Application Submission
The applications should be submitted online, including Transcripts and
Letters of Recommendation, to the site
http://concursos.fct.pt/bolsas, starting July 1st 2008.
The scores of the GRE, GMAT e TOEFL ou IELTS scores should be submitted
to the UTAustin | Portugal Program Office.
No other means of application submission will be accepted.
