Latest News

28.04.2021 - Applications to the Joint Post-Doctoral Program FCT-ALBA are now open. Deadline for applications: 31 May 2021. More information about applications here.

19.02.2021 - The selection process of projects under the FCT-ALBA collaboration agreement has been completed. The abstracts of the selected projects, as well as their teams and scientific areas can be found here. (see News).

30.12.2020 - The submission of proposals for collaborative projects between Portuguese research centres or universities and ALBA's scientific areas is open until 25 January 2021. (see News).

A Collaboration Framework Agreement was signed between FCT and CELLS – the Consortium for the Construction, Equipment and Exploitation of the Synchrotron Light Laboratory, on 11 February 2019, with the aim of establishing the framework for collaboration between the parties in the spirit of enhancing scientific and technical exchanges, of developing common projects, of easing the access to the scientific instrumentation on the considered institutions by both scientific communities. CELLS is a public consortium formed by an agreement between the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Autonomous Region of Catalonia in 2003, whose purpose is the construction, equipment and subsequent operation of a Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (ALBA), developing its activities in the field of production and scientific use of synchrotron.

This agreement creates the conditions for collaboration and the various lines of activities / possible initiatives, such as:

  • Competitive access for national researchers to the laboratory under the same conditions as Spanish researchers;
  • Participation of Portugal as an observer on the ALBA Scientific Advisory Committee (ALBA SAC), through the appointment of a Portuguese scientist of recognized merit;
  • Creation of a joint Post-Doctoral Program.

The signing of this agreement automatically made the first two initiatives take effect.

Post-doctoral program

Under the Collaboration Framework Agreement, FCT and CELLS signed an agreement in April 2019 establishing a Post-Doctoral joint program in the areas of biosciences, nanomaterials, catalysis and materials for energy, that includes funding of on Portuguese postdoc researcher in each of these fields, to be launched in due time.

About ALBA

ALBA is a 3rd generation synchrotron radiation facility, located near Barcelona. It is the only Synchrotron Light Laboratory built in Spain and the first such facility in southwest Europe. It is a complex of electron accelerators to produce synchrotron light, which allows the visualization of the atomic structure of matter as well as the study of its properties. The 3 GeV electron beam energy at ALBA is achieved by combining a Linear Accelerator (LINAC) and a low-emittance, full-energy BOOSTER placed in the same tunnel as the STORAGE RING. ALBA's 270-meter perimeter has 17 straight sections all of which are available for the installation of insertion devices.

ALBA currently has eight operational state-of-the-art beamlines, comprising soft and hard X-rays, which are devoted mainly to biosciences, condensed matter (magnetic and electronic properties, nanoscience) and materials science. Additionally, four beamlines are in construction: low-energy ultra-high-resolution angular photoemission for complex materials, microfocus for macromolecular crystallography, absorption and diffraction and fast X-ray tomography & radioscopy. This large scientific infrastructure provides more than 6.000 hours of beam time per year and is available for the academic and the industrial sector, serving more than 2.000 researchers every year.

ALBA promotes research in several fields, such as the study of biological structures and proteins, analysis of viruses and bacteria, creation of drugs and the design of new materials for the industry.
