HERA

HERA – Humanities in the European Research Area - is a network of national funding agencies for the Humanities community in Europe. HERA aims to set new and innovative research agendas and thus enhance the Humanities contribution to the European Research Area as well as to the ongoing debates on issues of special relevance to European society.

2019-2022 HERA JRP IV

In 2018, the HERA Network launched the 4th Joint Research Programme (HERA JRP IV): Public Spaces: Culture and Integration in Europe.

2016-2019 HERA JRP III

In 2015, HERA launched its third Joint Research Programme (HERA JRP III) a partnership consisting of 24 European research funding organizations from 23 countries, together with the European Commission, with a budget over 21 million Euros under the theme Uses of the Past.

Funded projects with Portuguese participation:

605 pre-proposals were submitted and 114 were from Portugal (19 with Portuguese leadership and 101 with Portuguese participation). 18 proposals were selected for funding,2 of them have a Portuguese institution as a participant: Centro em Rede de Investigação em Antropologia (researcher Clara Saraiva) and Cooperativa de Ensino Superior Artística do Porto (researcher Helena Maia). The total amount awarded to the two Portuguese projects was 300 000 Euros.

    • Summary of the funding opportunity
    • The funding was available for research projects that approached the theme Uses of the Past and that would involve four researchers from four different eligible countries. The application process took place in two stages.
    • What countries were involved?
    • The following countries commited to HERA JRP Uses of the Past:
    • Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom.
    • Funding
    • The funding came from HERA partners and from the European Union (additional funding through de ERA-NET Cofund mechanism).
    • The available funding for portuguese candidates in this call was 350 000 euros. The maximum per project was 250 000 euros for projects coordinated by a portuguese institution, or 150 000 euros for portuguese institutions participating only as partners in a project.

    • HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area) Matchmaking Event Uses of the Past –
    • HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area ) invited Researchers to apply to the Matchmaking Event Uses of the Past which took place in Tallinn in the 29th of January 2015.
    • The purpose of this event was to present the call for transnational proposals in the Humanities area under the theme Uses of the Past , and to facilitate the establishment of international research partnerships.
    • With about 23 million euros available, the research programme funded new projects focusing in the Humanities research on Uses of the Past engaging researchers from four or more countries.
    • Senior and early career researchers from the following HERA participating countries were eligible:
    • Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom.
    • To participate in the event, researchers had to send an Expression of Interest, consisting in a small project idea and a brief resumé.
    • Travelling expenses for the selected candidates could be reimbursed up to 350 euros. The applicants that were not invited to participate in this event, they still could present proposals to the call Uses of the Past, as could the researchers that did not submit an Expression of Interest.

2013-2016 HERA JRP II

In 2012, HERA launched its second Joint Research Programme (HERA JRP II), a partnership between 19 european funding research organizations from 18 countries, together with the European Commission, with a budget of over 18,9 million euros under the theme Cultural Encounters.

    • Projects funded with portuguese participation:
    • 593 pre-proposals were submitted: 34 with Portuguese leadership and 79 with portuguese participation. 18 proposals were selected for funding: one is coordinated by a Portuguese research institution (Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa – Ruy Blanes) and another by a portuguese institution as participant (Faculdade de Psicologia e Ciências da Educação da Universidade do Porto – Maria João Magalhães).
    • The total amount assigned to the two portuguese projects was of 520 597 euros.

2010-2013 HERA JRP I

In 2009, HERA launched its first Joint Research Programme (HERA JRP I) under two topics: Cultural Dynamics: Inheritance and Identity e Humanities as a Source of Creativity and Innovation.

FCT was not a partner in JRP I.
