ERA-NET Plant Genomics

Transnational Cooperation

ERA-NET Plant Genomics

FCT is a member of the ERA-NET Plant Genomics, a collaborative network of 23 funding agencies from 17 countries, with programmes in plant genomics. ERA-PG aims to stimulate excellent research, drive innovation and create a fruitful environment for commercial exploitation in Europe. ERA-PG, supported by the European Commission 6th Framework Programme for research, contributes to building the European Research Area (ERA).

ERA-PG 2nd Call for Proposals (2008)
ERA-NET Plant Genomics funds 12 transnational research projects

Launched at 2008, the second ERA-PG joint call entitled ‘Strengthening the European Research Area in plant genomics – integrating new technologies in plant science’ targeted research projects using plant genomics based technologies to answer biological questions of relevance to the development of a strong and competitive European bio-economy. The participants in this call were: Austria, Flanders (Belgium), Canada, Finland, Germany, Israel, Portugal, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Twelve transnational projects were funded with a total budget of approximately 16.5 Million €. This call was a joint initiative of eight partners of ERA-PG in collaboration with one more funding organisation from Austria, and funding organisations from Canada. All 54 applications submitted were eligible, so the success rate was 22%.

ERA-PG First Call for Proposals (2006)
29 Collaborative Research Projects funded

ERA-PG launched its first joint call in 2006 with a total budget of 35 Million €. The main topic of research was ‘Structuring Plant Genomic Research in Europe’, which was divided into two:

  • Sub Call A: Broad Call for Publicly Funded Research in Plant Genomics;
  • Sub Call B: Trilateral Partnership and beyond: the Future for European Public-Private Partnerships in Plant Genomics.

The call was addressed to plant genomic researchers in Belgium (Flanders), Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and United Kingdom.

The ERA-PG Sub Call A consortium granted the 15 out of 44 submitted full proposals, with a total budget of nearly 21 Million €.

Granted research projects with portuguese participation

  1. Integrated analysis of stem cell function in plant growth and development - Aurélio Campilho, U. Porto.
  2. Genome-wide analysis of short RNAs as modulators in dehydration stress tolerance using tolerant and genetic model systems - Manuel Pedro Fevereiro, U. Lisbon; Maria Pais, U. Lisbon.

The ERA-PG Sub Call B consortium granted 14 proposals (of which 13 public-private partnerships) out of 30 submitted full proposals, with a total budget of 16.6 Million €.

Granted research projects with portuguese participation

  1. Eucalyptus genomics research network for improved wood properties and adaptation to drought - Cristina M. P. Marques, RAIZ; Ana Pires, Technical U. of Lisbon.
  2. Genomic research-assisted breeding for sustainable production of quality grapes and wine - Manuel Pedro Salema-Fevereiro, ITQB; Maria Solamé Soares Pais, ICAT; Sara Amâncio, ISA; Hans-Jörg Böhm, PLANSEL Lda (own funding).
  3. Exploiting genetic variability of resistance genes in major European food legumes to improve varieties for sustainable agriculture - Maria Carlota Vaz Pato, U. Lisbon.
