Traineeships at CERN, ESA, ESO and EMBL

Description

Within the scope of the protocols with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) for advanced training of human resources, FCT offers one-year internship opportunities, renewable for a further year. Young Portuguese engineers are given the opportunity to develop on-the-job training in strategic technological domains, which may contribute to an increase in competitiveness of Portuguese industry.

Objectives

The main objective of this programme is to ensure advanced training of young Portuguese graduates at large, world-leading International Scientific Organisations, namely CERN, ESA, ESO and EMBL.

Funding

Fellowships for trainees at International Scientific and Technological Organisations (BEST) have the following stipends:

Monthly stipend Travel expenses Accomodation expenses Insurance
1450 € (Graduate);
1710 € (Master);
2245 € (PhD)
300 € (Europe);
600 € (Outside Europe)
1000 € Personal Accidents;

Who can apply

Fellowships for trainees at International Scientific and Technological Organisations are intended for candidates with a degree or master's degree - obtained less than 6 years ago - and with a PhD - obtained less than 3 years ago - in scientific and technological areas in areas where the competence of these International Organizations is recognized, and meet the following requirements:

  • Be a Portuguese citizen, or a foreign citizen residing permanently in Portugal.
  • Hold a degree in areas related to the expertise of CERN, ESA, ESO and EMBL;
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English.

Annual calls for applications are launched by FCT, usually during September-October. Further information is made available with each call.
