National Programme for Scientific Equipment Renewal

Implementation and Outcome Indicators

The implementation and outcome indicators were obtained from data provided by Principal Investigators in the Final Reports Validated.

Indicators of Implementation

Concerning the analysis of Implementation, Graphs C, D, E and F illustrate the distribution of equipment acquired (number of pieces and cost) per unit cost ranges, by region and by scientific area.

Charts D and E show that the equipment purchased with unit cost in the range:

  1. [500 000, + 8[ are a reduced number of pieces (18 out of 3122) and are located in Norte, Centro, Lisboa e Vale do Tejo and Not-included in a Region categories, and its overall cost represents 17.7% of the total cost the equipment purchased;
  2. [0, 100 000[ € € constitute 92.2% of pieces of equipment, and the overall cost is 38.4% of the total cost of the equipment;
  3. [100 000, 250 000[ € constitute 5.6% of pieces of equipment and represent 27% of the total cost of the equipment;
  4. [250 000, 500 000[ € constitute 1.7% of pieces of equipment and represent 17% of the total cost of the equipment.

In summary, the cost of equipment with a unit cost within the ranges [0, 100 000 [€ and [100 000 250 000 [€, represents 98% of the equipment purchased and constitute 65.4% of the total investment in equipment.

We can thus conclude that the PNRC was essentially a programme for renovation and upgrading of midrange equipment, with the exception of Mass Spectrometry, Functional Brain Imaging, Electron Microscopy and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance National Networks.

Outcome Indicators: Employment and Training

It is important to mention the number of jobs maintained (344) and created (217) resulting from the execution of the projects and the impact on Advanced Training, in particular the number of Masters and PhD students (8379) and Postdoctoral students (1739) who benefited from the renewal of the facilities, among other impacts.

Regarding “New Jobs created", the distribution by region and scientific area is as follows (see Chart G): Norte (33%), Centro (14,0%), Lisboa e Vale do Tejo (47,5%), representing 94.5% of the 217 new jobs, with the remaining distributed by: Algarve (1%), Madeira (1%) Not- included in a Region.

The distribution of the jobs created by Scientific Area is the following (Chart H): Biological Sciences (15%), Physics (9%), Social Sciences and Humanities (8%), Health Sciences (7%), Electronics and Computer Engineering (7%), Materials Science and Engineering (7%), Chemistry (6%), Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (5%), Earth and Space Sciences (5%) and Mass Spectrometry National Network (5%), which represents 74% of the total.

As to the impact of the PNRC in Advanced Training (Chart I) the number of students covered by the renewal of the facilities is 10.118, of which 83% are Masters and PhD students and 17% are Postdoctoral students.

The breakdown of Masters and PhD students by scientific area (Chart J) is significant in Civil Engineering (14%), Biological Sciences (14%), Mechanical Engineering (11%), Social Sciences and Humanities (9%), Health Sciences (8.5%), Electronics and Computer Engineering (6%), Materials Science and Engineering (6%), Chemistry (5%) and Mass Spectrometry National Network (5.2%). With regard to Postdoctoral Students the scientific areas covered by this equipment were Biological Sciences (19%), National Mass Spectrometry Network (18.5%), Health Sciences (11%), Chemistry (7.5%), Materials Science and Engineering (6.3%) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance National Network (6%).
