Vision and Objectives

The FCT and the Maratona da Saúde Associação (MdS) intend, through the 2021 edition of the Maratona da Saúde Awards, to support Rare Diseases Research. The two best scientific research projects in the area of Rare Diseases to be developed in Portugal will be distinguished.

The Protocol between the MdS and the FCT, signed in September 2014, provides for FCT support in the application process, including the definition of the composition of the jury, as well as the procedures for receiving and submitting applications to the jury. The funding to be awarded to the selected research projects comes mainly from donations raised during the MdS television show, broadcasted by RTP. In the 7th edition of Maratona da Saúde, Janssen was one of the main partners and it will associate its name to one of the awards.

Financing and duration

The two best projects presented will be awarded the unit amount of € 20,000 (twenty thousand euros), one for each category (junior and senior), for a maximum period of two years, starting between September and December 2021.

Recipients and Eligibility

This call is open for researchers and/or medical doctors, Portuguese or foreign, who have completed their doctoral studies for less than ten years (Junior Category) and for more than ten years (Senior Category) at the date of the call opening.

Applications that include partnerships between research institutions based in Portugal and hospitals or other health institutions, national or foreign, are encouraged.

Application deadline

Applications must be submitted between March 15 and April 16, 2021 (17h - Lisbon time).

Evaluation and selection of applications

After ranking the best candidates of the competition, the MdS Scientific Council ratifies the decision of the jury and informs the board of MdS, which will approve the winners according to the recommendations obtained.
