Purpose and Overview

The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), an organisation of the European Union, integrates higher education, research and business in areas of high societal need through Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs). EIT is to increase European sustainable growth and competitiveness by reinforcing the innovation capacity of the EU. KICs gather hundreds of partners in co-location centres across Europe.

FCT aims to support Portuguese research teams in joining the new KICs, through the establishment of co-location centres in Portugal. Towards this end, FCT launches a call for business plans for the implementation of co-location centres of a KIC. The selected proposal(s) are expected to integrate European consortia applying to the 2014 EIT call for KICs (EIT-KIC-2014).

The R&D areas addressed in this call are: innovation for healthy living and active ageing; and raw materials.

This call is fully funded by national funds via the Ministry of Education and Science, with an overall budget of €200 000.

What’s included

Each approved proposal shall receive up to €50 000, covering the period of time up to submission to the EIT-KIC-2014 call by the European consortium in which the Portuguese co-location centre is integrated. Funding cannot extend beyond 12 months.

Eligibility

Applications should involve key actors from the three sides of the knowledge triangle: research, higher education, and innovation-entrepreneurship-business.

Researchers and research teams from the following organisations may apply: higher education institutions and associated research centres; Associated Laboratories; State Laboratories; private non-profit institutions (dedicated to R&D); companies (within proposals led by public or private, non-profit research institutions, and other public or private, non-profit organisations that carry out scientific research.

How and when to apply

Applications should be submitted online between 10th July and 5pm (Lisbon time), 24th October 2013.

Applicants are advised to read the Application and Evaluation Guide and the Regulations for FCT-funded R&D projects, before submitting an application.

Evaluation

Proposals shall be evaluated by an international review panel, on merit across four evaluation criteria:

  1. International scientific merit and innovativeness
  2. Scientific excellence of the research team
  3. Feasibility of the research project and realistic budget allocation
  4. Contribution of the research to the advancement of knowledge and of capacity of the S&T system in Portugal.
