Call for the Entrepreneurial Research Initiatives of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program

Purpose and Overview

The Phase II of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program, funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), emphasizes advanced education and research that can lead to significant entrepreneurial impact. The activities of the program are for the most part configured in Entrepreneurial Research Initiatives (ERIs).

ERIs are projects in science, engineering, management and policy that integrate activities in research, innovation, advanced education and training of human resources, with industry collaboration and emphasis on the commercialization of technology for real world impact.

The mission of the ERIs is to stimulate and promote Portuguese innovation in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), by acting as international innovation engines, embedded in global knowledge and business networks, to train creative innovators, generate new ideas, and translate them into products, processes and services.

What's included

The maximum budget for Portuguese universities and research institutions in each ERI is € 750,000.00. Funded ERIs will have a maximum duration of 48 months.

Eligibility

Researchers and research teams from the following organizations may apply for funding: higher education institutions and associated research centres; Associated Laboratories; State Laboratories; private non-profit institutions (dedicated to R&D), and other public or private, non-profit organizations that carry out scientific research.

How and when to apply

Applications should be submitted online between July 17 and 5pm (GMT), of October 16, 2013.

Applicants are advised to read the latest Application Guide, the Guidelines for Entrepreneurial Research Initiatives Proposals Writing, the Terms of Reference for the Entrepreneurial Research Initiatives Call for Proposals, the Guide for Peer Reviewers and the Regulations before submitting an application.

Evaluation

Submitted proposals shall be evaluated by international review panels. Each proposal shall be evaluated on its merit across five evaluation criteria:

  1. Scientific merit and innovative nature of the project from an international standpoint;
  2. Scientific merit of the research team;
  3. Feasibility of the plan of work and reasonableness of the budget;
  4. Contribution to the body of knowledge and competence of the National Science and Technology System;
  5. Potential economic value of the technology.
