OVERVIEW

To pursue the joint activities of the “Portugal-China Joint Innovation Centre for Advanced Materials”, FCT and the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People´s Republic of China (MOST), launch the 2nd call for proposals for joint research projects.

This call takes place within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry for Education and Science (Portugal) and the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China, signed on 25 June 2012, in Lisbon. The Portugal-China Joint Innovation Centre for Advanced Materials was established on 28 February 2013 at Zhejiang University, and aims to strengthen R&D activities and technology transfer, as well as the market uptake of innovations in the field of advanced materials.

For this call, each research proposal should involve cooperation between at least two research groups, one of which is a Chinese partner and one of which is a Portuguese partner, under a joint research plan, within the following research fields::

  • Biomedical Materials
  • Nanotechnology and Nanomaterials
  • Sustainable Materials
  • Materials for Energy

The winner of the 2013 call was the project “Biofunctional coatings for cardiovascular interventional devices” (Biomedical Materials), by Cristina Martins (Instituto Nacional de Engenharia Biomédica), and Jian Ji (Zhejiang University).

FUNDING

FCT will provide the overall amount of €300,000 for Portuguese teams. Three proposals are expected to be funded, with a maximum budget for each of €100,000.
MOST will provide matching funds for up to three projects, with three years duration.

ELIGIBILITY

Portuguese applicants in research teams from the following organisations may apply, individually or in association: higher education institutions, their institutes and R&D centres; Associated Laboratories; State Laboratories; private non-profit institutions who carry out science and technology activities; companies, if within projects led by R&D institutions of public or private non-profit; other public and private non-profit institutions, which carry out or participate in research activities.
Chinese applicants will follow MOST regulations for eligibility.

HOW TO APPLY

Joint project proposals should be submitted simultaneously by the Portuguese partners to FCT and by the Chinese researchers to MOST, in the prescribed format, by 29 February 2016.

Portuguese applicants should download the Application Form and e-mail it to FCT, in pdf format. Chinese applicants should apply to MOST online submission system.

Applications should be submitted with a Declaration of Commitment.

Unilaterally submitted projects proposals shall not be considered.

EVALUATION

Proposals will be evaluated according to the scientific merit and the relevance of the proposal, through international peer review, conducted by FCT and MOST.
After evaluation, a Joint Committee Meeting between FCT and MOST will decide which proposals will be funded.
