The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) was launched in Tunis in 2005, following the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society, as a multistakeholder discussion platform, involving all the relevant actors in this area - governments, intergovernamental bodies, private sector, civil society and the technical and academic communities - for a discussion about the governance, on a equal standing of the worldwide platform that is the Internet.
The main purpose of the IGF is to facilitate inclusive, productive discussions on Internet related to public policy issues from a general perspective, and to influence the decision making, both in public and pirvate sectors. IGF aims to maximize the opportunity for open and inclusive dialogue and to meet the challenges of the Internet related issues.
The past editions of IGF, that occur yearly, were held in Atenas (2006), Rio de Janeiro (2007), Hyderabad (2008), Sharm El Sheik (2009), Vilnius (2010), Nairobi (2011), Baku (2012), Bali (2013), Istambul (2014), João Pessoa (2015), Guadalajara (2016), Genebra (2017) and in Paris (2018). 2019' edition will take place in Berlin.
