The Internet Governance Forum - IGF2016 - ‘Enabling Inclusive and Sustainable Growth’, is being held at the PALCCO Centre from 6-9 December 2016 in Jalisco, Mexico.

On 7th december Portugal represented by FCT (Department of Information Society) will present Messages from Lisbon at the Workshop “Is personal data ‘mine’ or there to be ‘mined’?”. These messages are the outcomes of the sessions of the portuguese IGF (Forum for the Information Society – Internet Governance 2016) held in Lisbon, on October and November 2016.

Internet Governance involves a multitude of public policies and technical issues, including DNS management (Domain Name System), IP adressing, consumer protection, as well as capacity-building, education, training, sustainability, robustness, security and stability of the Internet, the guaranteeing of freedom of expression and the protection of privacy, the promotion of multilingualism and the creation of supportive conditions regarding the development of the Internet.

Nowadays the working definition for Internet Governance that is internacionally accepted is “the development and application by governments, the private sector and civil society, in their respective roles, of shared principles, norms, rules, decision-making procedures, and programmes that shape the evolution and use of the Internet” (provided by the Working Group on Internet Governance (WGIG), which was set up by the United Nations during the first phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), and on nº 35 of the WSIS Tunis Agenda (Tunis, 2015))

The Internet Governance has received worldwide attention at the highest level within the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) held under UN auspices in two sessions, one in Geneva in 2003 and another in Tunis in 2005.

Internet Goverance themes are currently discussed at several international fora, including UN, IGF – Internet Governance Forum and ICANN - Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.
