TRANSCAN-3: Sustained collaboration of national and regional programmes in cancer research

The ERA-NET TRANSCAN-3 (2021 – 2026) is an ERA-NET Cofund on Translational Cancer Research, being the third TRANSCAN action, in which FCT is a partner. This network has now 31 partners from 20 countries. This ERA-NET has the goal of coordinating national and regional funding programmes for research in the area of translational cancer research. The specific challenge is to promote a transnational collaborative approach between scientific teams in demanding areas of translational cancer research.

Call Topic

"Next generation cancer immunotherapy: targeting the tumour microenvironment"

Projects must cover at least one of the areas specified below, which are equal in relevance for this call:

  1. Identification and validation of TME subclasses and their contribution to the resistance mechanisms: Translational research using tumour samples collected from retrospective and/or prospective cohorts of patients.
  2. Targeting TME to improve efficacy of immunotherapy in human patients.

Call main eligibility criteria

  • Only transnational projects will be funded.
  • Each consortium must involve a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 research groups from at least 3 different countries participating in the call.
  • A research consortium must not involve more than 2 research groups from one country.
  • Up to 1 (one) research group from a country not participating in this call may be included in a consortium, if this group is able to secure its own funding.
  • Each consortium must involve at least one basic or pre-clinical research team and one clinical team. It is also recommended to include an expert team in methodology, biostatistics or bioinformatics, depending on the type of work planned.

    Austria, Belgium, Canada, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Taiwan and Turkey.

    How to Apply

    1- Please read carefully the Call Documents.

    2- Consult the National Documents which will be available in the box on the right. Also read the specific National funding regulations of all the participating countries involved in your consortium (including your own), available in the Call Document. Non-eligible partners may lead to the rejection of the whole consortium.

    3- If you're the coordinator of your consortium, access the TRANSCAN-3 online submission platform to submit your proposal. It will be available from 20th April 2021 until the deadline.

    4- Each Portuguese partner has to send to the Call National Contact Point a Statement of Commitment duly signed, dated and stamped by the Head of the Portuguese applicant organization and by the Portuguese Principal Investigator, until 10 days after the deadline for submission of pre-proposals (until 13rd July 2021). The Statement is solely in regard to the work performed by the Portuguese team. FCT may latter require the original of the statement of commitment.

    FCT financial commitment and funding regulations (Portugal only)

    National funding commitment for the call: 100.000 €

    Note: if more than one Portuguese institution participates in a given consortium, the budget has to be shared. Portuguese institutions must follow FCT's Legislation, Regulations and Norms. The dedication (FTE) in transnational projects is not taken into account for the 100% (FTE) dedication to national projects.
