Portugal and Space

The Portuguese Space Agency - Portugal Space, whose creation was determined by Resolution of Council of Ministers no. 55/2019, of the 13 of March was constituted as a private non-profit association, founded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT), the National Innovation Agency, the Directorate General of National Defense Resources (DGRDN) and the Autonomous Region of the Azores, through the RAEGE Azores Association - Atlantic Network of Geodynamic and Space Stations. In this context, the Board of Directors of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT) transferred to Portugal Space its activities under the Space Programme.

Portugal Space is responsible for promoting and implementing the "Portugal Space 2030" Strategy and coordinating the management of the several national Space-related programs by encouraging investment, creating qualified jobs and providing services related to Space science and technology within the European Space Agency (ESA) and the process of development of the International Centre for Research in the Atlantic (AIR Center). Its aim is to stimulate the Space sector in Portugal, creating conditions for the development of national capacity and expertise in the field of space industry, namely the "New Space Industries", as well as scientific research, innovation, education and culture, as far as Space is concerned. It is also intended to boost the European space landscape through international cooperation, notably at ESA level and other European space agencies. It is also responsible for implementing and promoting the AZORES International Satellite Launch Programme (AZORES ISLP) in partnership with ESA.

Portugal Space is based in Santa Maria Island, in the Autonomous Region of the Azores and has facilities in Lisbon, at Laranjeiras Palace. Ricardo Conde is the President of Portugal Space.
