Main Activities

Following the initiatives under the Portuguese Polar Program (PROPOLAR) FCT supported the 1st Portuguese Antarctic Campaign (2011), through the funding of project PROPOLAR-2011.

International protocols in force

  • Spain (2009) - Memorandum of Understanding for joint participation in polar research
  • British Antarctic Survey (BAS, United Kingdom - 2011) - Statement of Commitment for mutual cooperation in polar science and logistics.

Submission of proposals for FCT funding

There are no currently FCT calls specifically addressed to polar research, therefore applications must be submitted under calls for projects on all scientific domains - http://www.fct.pt/apoios/projectos/concursos/index.phtml.en.

Applications for research grants and other advanced training may also be submitted (more information at http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/concursos/).

Portuguese Polar Program (PROPOLAR), responsible for Portuguese Antarctic Campaigns 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 organization, integrates and supports different projects / activities after its selection. We recommend an attentive reading of the provided FAQ on PROPOLAR website, at http://www.propolar.org/.

The Statement of Commitment - Polar Research, mandatory for all proposals submited within calls for FCT funding and involving the permanence and research activity in the polar regions (Arctic and Antarctic) is available here.

National Participation in International Organizations

  • Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), 2006
  • Center for Marine Sciences (CCMAR) is the national representative of this organization. SCAR is an independent and interdisciplinary International Council for Science, whose goal is to initiate, develop and coordinate high quality international research in Antarctic, highlighting this region role in the Earth system.

International regulations applicable to polar research

  • Antarctic Treaty - Em 29 de Janeiro de 2010, Portugal depositou o instrumento de ratificação do Tratado para a Antártida junto do Governo dos Estados Unidos da América, tornando-se Parte do Tratado.
  • Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty (Madrid Protocol) - Process of Portugal adherence in progress.
