JPI – Joint Programming Initiatives

Within the completion of the European Research Area and following the conclusions of the Competitiveness Council (CC) of December 2008 on the importance of the joint programming of research in Europe to answer the major social challenges, the process to identify the topics to constitute Joint Programming Initiatives (JPI) was initiated. These initiatives are intended to develop and implement common research strategic agendas to strength transnational cooperation, coordination and integration of research programs of the Member States in certain social key domains to Europe.

The proposal of topics for JPI is a joint work between the European Commission and the Council. The GPC – High Level Group for Joint Programming, whose Portuguese representation is ensured by FCT, accompanies and monitors the joint programming process.

The participation in the JPI is voluntary and may not involve all Member States in each specific JPI. However, it is intended that the partners are able to provide the critical mass of resources needed to achieve them.
