NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme

The NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme is of the highest importance in the context of broader NATO policy and it’s strategic Emerging Security Challenges partnerships.

SPS embodies NATO’s partnership policy and orientations and includes a wide variety of areas, namely Cyber Security, Counter-Terrorism, Energy and Environmental Security, Telecommunications, Micro Waves, Imaging Processing, Bioinformatics, Informatics Networks, High Performance Computing, Data Analysis, Robotics, Nuclear Security, Sources of Radiation, Management of Toxic Waste, Applied Optics, Physics, Chemistry, Defense against CBRN Agents, etc.

Aim

The NATO Science Programme for Peace and Security (SPS) is an important contributor to the reinforcement of Euro-Atlantic efforts in international security, enhancing scientific and technological research and promoting international cooperation between NATO Member States and Allies.

Implementation

The SPS Programme funds R&D multi-annual projects, specialised training sessions, and the organisation of workshops involving the scientific communities of Member States and, at least, one Allied Country.
Projects can be funded with between 200 and 300 K€. Purchase of equipment is eligible.

Management

In Portugal, the Department of International Relations (DRI) of the national funding agency Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) coordinates Portuguese participation in the NATO SPS Programme.
