The award ceremony is scheduled for November.
The creation of the Fernando Gil International Prize in
Philosophy of Science was announced by the Portuguese government at the time
of his death, to honor his memory and work (1937-2006). The Prize was
launched as a joint initiative of the Portuguese government, represented by
the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), and the Calouste Gulbenkian
Foundation (FCG).
The Fernando Gil International Prize, initially awarded annually (in 2010 and 2011), is now awarded every two years in Lisbon. The 2017 prize was awarded to Emily Grosholz, Professor of Philosophy, African American Studies and English, and a member of the Center for Fundamental Theory / Institute for Gravitation and the Cosmos at the Pennsylvania State University.
The Prize intends to acknowledge a work of excellence in the domain of the Philosophy of Science, either regarding general epistemological problems or particular scientific areas. Science is here understood in a broad sense to include mathematics, computer science, medicine, economics and the social sciences, as well as the natural sciences such as physics, chemistry and biology.
Only original and recent works by a single author, of any nationality or professional affiliation, published during the five previous years (2014-2018) is considered for the prize.
The recipient of the Prize is requested to deliver an original public lecture that will be published by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and to conduct a programme of specialised seminars for students and researchers in Lisbon on the occasion of the award ceremony.
The amount to be paid to the laureate will be €75.000
(Seventy-Five Thousand Euros).
Nominations for the Fernando Gil International Prize 2019 in Philosophy of
Science should be sent to premio-filosofia@fernando-gil.org.pt.
The call for nominations opens on 24 September to 15 January 2019. Self-nominations will not be accepted.
Nominations should include the following elements:
- The complete publication data regarding the nominated work;
- A critical review of the work giving reasons why it should be considered as worthy of the prize (500 words);
- A brief biography of the author (500 words);
- E-mail address of the nominated author.
The authors will be contacted by FCT to provide a paper copy and a PDF of the nominated work, in order to be evaluated by the jury.
The required elements above are conditions for the acceptance of nominations.
The nominated works will be evaluated by the jury during the course of 2019. The prize will be awarded in March 2020.
