Exploratory Research Projects
in all Scientific Domains – 2013

Purpose and Overview

Through this call for one-year exploratory research projects, FCT wishes to support innovative ideas in all research domains in order to foster the development of emerging research areas and/or the consolidation of excellence in established areas.

Proposals should entail the exploration of original concepts and/or ideas, be of international standards and contribute to the generation of new knowledge or the advancement of a research field.

The overall budget for this call is €8.5 million (which includes a €3.5 million EU contribution, via the COMPETE – Programa Operacional Factores de Competitividade programme).

What’s included

Each approved proposal shall receive funding for one-year, of up to €50 000.

Eligibility

Researchers who obtained their PhD between 2003 and 2009 (with no exceptions), and who are not principle applicant on other FCT projects as of 1st January 2014, may apply as principal applicant in this call.

Researchers and research teams from the following organisations may apply: higher education institutions and associated research centres; Associated Laboratories; State Laboratories; private non-profit institutions (dedicated to R&D); companies (within proposals led by public or private, non-profit research institutions, and other public or private, non-profit organisations that carry out scientific research.

How and when to apply

Applications should be submitted online between 30th May and 5pm (GMT), 2nd July 2013.

Applicants are advised to read the Latest Application Guide and the Regulations, before submitting an application.

Evaluation

Submitted proposals shall be evaluated by international review panels, specific to each research domain.
Each proposal shall be evaluated on its merit across four evaluation criteria:

  1. International scientific merit and innovativeness
  2. Scientific excellence of the research team
  3. Feasibility of the research project and realistic budget allocation
  4. Contribution of the research to the advancement of knowledge and of capacity of the S&T system in Portugal.
