R&D Institutions

R&D Units

R&D Units are public or private non-profit research institutions dedicated to scientific research and technological development.

The 312 R&D Units with funding approved for the period 2020-2023 which are distributed through different areas of knowledge and throughout the national territory. The R&D Units can be entities integrated in different universities or polytechnics, or be partnerships between universities, or have an independent statute and autonomous activity. A total of around 19 000 researchers carry out research activities in these units.

R&D Units are periodically evaluated, every 4-5 years, by international panels of evaluators, who award a rating and funding for the following multi-annual period.

The results of the 2017/2018 evaluation process determined the funding of R&D Units with a rating equal to Good, Very Good and Excellent, for the period 2020-2023.
