2 NIH-FCT Research Fellows selected in 2014 call

FCT and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have agreed on a five-year collaborative training programme for post-doctoral researchers. The NIH-FCT Research Fellow Programme will award post-doctoral fellowships to Portuguese researchers of exceptional talent, to carry out research in one of the 1 200 laboratories of the NIH campuses. The selected fellows will join the NIH Intramural Research Programme.

The Programme aims to:

Establish a long-term career path for Portuguese research scientists of exceptional scientific ability;
Build long-term collaborations between the NIH and leading research centres and higher education institutions in Portugal;
Promote and ensure the selection of the best Portuguese trainees to receive outstanding mentorship at NIH;
Help ensure support for the FCT Fellows’ return to Portugal after completion of their training at NIH to pursue independent research careers and continued long-term scientific collaborations with their NIH mentors.

The Programme provides selected fellows with up to three years of postdoctoral/career development training at the NIH, followed by up to three years of research at a university or research centre in Portugal.

The preparatory phase of an application to the NIH-FCT Research Fellow Programme entails the identification of a prospective NIH Mentor, from amongst the NIH Principal Investigators that conduct research within the Intramural Research Programme.

Eligible applications are assessed by an Evaluation Panel of Portugal-based leading researchers. NIH determines the final list of selected applicants for the Programme, from a shortlist provided by FCT.
